"Democrats Head To Austin To Set Up For Texas Primary

Posted: Feb 6, 2008 05:19 PM CST

The two Democrats in the race for the presidential nomination are heading to Austin to invigorate their followers in the Lone Star State.

Austin is the cradle of Democratic politics in Texas, as well as a place where both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will be looking for financial backers. You can look for events for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton at their websites.

Daniel Milgrom, a longtime Hillary Clinton supporter, said it is about time other backers in Austin unite to bring home the gold on March 4.

"I just think she's a tougher, better person, cause we're in real tough times," Milgrom said. "I think that majority of Clinton supporters just need somebody to light the fire. Hopefully, I can, and some people like me can do the same thing."

But Milgrom has quite the feat ahead of him. Obama supporters have been organized in Austin since 2007, when more than 23,000 people showed up at his rally at Auditorium Shores.

David Kobierowski helped organize that event and said it shows just how much support Obama has in Texas.

"There were 23,000 people on a rainy Friday afternoon, so if he comes now, expect at least 50,000  people to show up here in Austin," Kobierowski said.

Kobierowski said his candidate's campaign in Texas has just begun. Sixty staff members are expected to fly in from Chicago and set up camp in Texas this week.

"We've got offices that we're going to start opening here in Austin this week," Kobierowski said. "We're going to be opening offices all across the state."

Clinton's camp said they are also about to step into the scene. The campaign is planning to open offices in Austin and other major Texas cities, as well as hold a debate in Houston at the end of February, because Texas could end up being the king, or queen, maker come March.

"We can be the absolute difference right here," Kobierowski said. "This is what it's all about right here. It all comes down to March 4."

Texans for Obama is holding a volunteer training session Wednesday night at Scholtz Garten and a political symposium at Mitchie's Gallery Saturday morning.

Presidential Candidates Take On Texas

the event hosted by CNN, Univision and the Texas Democratic Party from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 21.

Univision and CNN will each provide a journalist to pose questions to the candidates, and CNN will provide the moderator for the event.

"We're pleased that Senator Obama will have the opportunity to debate in Texas and that it will air on Univision, ensuring a wide and diverse audience," said Obama Texas state director Adrian Saenz.

The debate will air live on CNN and will reair in Spanish on the Univision network at 10:30 p.m. Thursday. It will also air in Spanish on CNN en Español on Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening.

White House Hopefuls Eye The Lone Star State
Meanwhile, all the candidates are starting to look toward the Lone Star State. As the days tick down to the state primary, candidates are gearing up to convince Texans where to place their votes.

Barack Obama will start launching health-care commercials in Texas on Tuesday. His staffers are planning to set up offices in East Austin, downtown at Eighth Street and Congress Avenue, and in Williamson County.

"We're lucky we have a phenomenal organization here already, so we're going to work with them and where people need to focus their efforts to help the movement," said Texans for Obama policy coordinator David Kobierowski.
